This form of treatment involves using a micro needle to inject
a special kind of fluid, called a sclerosant, into the vein. This
fluid causes the vein walls to become non-functional and to gradually
fade away. Sclerotherapy has been
available since the 1930's but it is not an effective treatment
for large varicose veins.
More Information:
The sclerosant used at Vein Specialists
of Augusta varies, depending on the specific needs of each
patient. One sclerosant used at VSA is called polidocanol, (aethoxysclerol)
which was developed as a local anesthetic. It doesn't burn or
sting as some other sclerosants do. At VSA, we use polidocanol,
STS (sodium tetradecyl sulfate), and glycerin. Again, the sclerosant
chosen depends on the needs of the patient.
We are as anxious for you to have good results as you are to
have them. You can return to normal activities right away, but
we ask you to refrain from vigorous exercise or hot tubs for a
few days, and to wear your compression stocking for at least 48
hours.
